This fascinating walking tour recounts the personal story of Andrew C. Marshall, a slave who purchased his freedom in 1812 with $200 advanced to him by Richard Richardson – the first owner of the Owens-Thomas House. The tour focuses on the neighborhood to the east of the Owens-Thomas House, placing special emphasis on the history and lives of blacks, both enslaved and free, who inhabited this area. Touching upon the subtle, yet complex, relationships between blacks and whites in the nineteenth-century South, it reveals how the institution of slavery impacted the lives of both Andrew Cox Marshall, who led the congregation of the First African Baptist Church for forty years, and of Richard Richardson, a factor in antebellum Savannah.
