The Society is named in honor of Gari Melchers, the Telfair’s fine arts advisor from 1906-1916, a respected American artist who acquired some to the museum’s most important and enduring works. The Gari Melchers Collectors’ Society was established in 2005 by a group of dedicated supporters who became the founders of the organization. General membership in the Society is open to all Telfair members – from seasoned or aspiring collectors to those who are simply interested in supporting the growth of the museum’s permanent collection and experiencing unique educational programs.
Melchers Society members enjoy close interaction with the museum’s director, curatorial staff, and fellow collectors and art enthusiasts, and experience special access to the Telfair’s art holdings. Society members also benefit from members-only programs and behind-the-scenes tours designed to enhance their understanding and appreciation of art, including private exhibition previews, gallery walks, and exclusive programs with experts in the field. Art-related travel opportunities, ranging from visits to artists’ studios and private collections to prominent art fairs, museums, and galleries, are an exciting part of Melchers Society membership. Most importantly, Melchers Society members play an integral role in Telfair operations by actively participating in the growth of the museum’s collection.

Melchers Society acquires Vespers, by namesake artist Gari Melchers, for Telfair collection
Telfair Museums announces the recent acquisition of an excellent example of the work of Gari Melchers, the highly-regarded American artist who served as the Telfair’s fine arts advisor from 1906-1916. Melchers’ Vespers, an image of a young Dutch woman seated in a church interior, is a stunning example of the kind of work that established Melchers as one of America’s most respected expatriate artists during the late 19th-century. The work was auctioned by Sotheby’s in Amsterdam on Tuesday, June 7.
