Scottish Ornithology for the Discriminating Collector

Here is the piece you’ve been looking for to complete the look of your gentleman’s study. Snipes, from the watercolor brush of Scotland’s Archibald Thorburn, measures 15 x 19 inches, is exquisitely framed by Lisa Atwell, and features the rich, earthy browns and grays of that bird’s habitat. Born in 1860, Archibald Thorburn is considered one of the greatest ornithological artists of Great Britain. The son of a miniaturist painter for Queen Victoria, Thorburn began sketching at an early age and received much of his early training from his father. In 1880, Thorburn began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in London and

continued to do so for the next 20 years. Thorburn continually traveled around Great Britain in order to study birds and animals in their natural surroundings, preferring to paint from life than from captive or taxidermy species. This painting comes to us through the generosity of Travis Strahan and the estate of Ronald J. Strahan; proceeds from its sale will go directly to the Ronald J. Strahan Acquisitions Endowment, allowing the Telfair to continue to purchase art for its collection. We encourage you to consider the long-term benefits of this bequest as you bid.

Mercer’s Moon River

It takes very little imagination to name the seated figure in this painting, as it must be Johnny Mercer himself—perhaps humming about a certain Huckleberry friend as he dreams by the light of the moon. The subtle mastery of Ray Ellis has rarely been more evident than in this original work, painted especially for the 2010 Telfair Ball. The 12 x 16” image is rendered in oil on linen, and framed by Belinda Dewart of MasterSolutions, the artist’s framer of choice. Featuring the soft but glowing colors of a moonlit coastal night, Mercer’s Moon River beckons your bid to make this view your own.

Check, please!

This serigraph, number 85 in an edition of 150 by Andy Warhol, was created specifically for the famed literary magazine, the Paris Review, which commissioned a limited-edition print from a major contemporary artist each year beginning in 1964. Warhol’s genius included transforming the mundane realities of daily life into works of art that captured the essence of America’s consumer and celebrity-driven culture –as evidenced by this oversized image of a grand-scale liquor receipt, signed in vermillion ink and completed by two large punch holes. The piece is deliberately offered unframed, as its “signature” makes such a statement that framing must be decided within your desired environment. We are grateful to the estate of Ronald J. Strahan for the donation of this piece, and pleased to dedicate the monies from the sale of this work to the Ronald J. Strahan Acquisitions Endowment, allowing the Telfair to continue to purchase art for its collection. We encourage you to bid with your heart, knowing that your gift will make a difference for generations to come.

Pheasant Hunt at Toohollie Farm

Just outside of Oliver, Georgia, is Toohollie Farm–appropriately situated on Old Louisville Road, which connects modern-day Savannah to Louisville, the former capital of Georgia. Toohollie, named for the two massive American holly trees standing in front of the main house,

seamlessly blends the beauty and country traditions of yesterday with the sensitivity of 20th-century conservation interests. Toohollie’s magnificent acreage includes large stands of loblolly pines, spruce pines, and mixed hardwoods, some of which may have borne witness to the December 1864 encampment of General William Tecumseh Sherman’s West Flank. Certified by the Tree Farm System since 1956, Toohollie was named the National Tree Farm of the Year in 1994 by the American Forest Foundation.

It is difficult to imagine a more perfect setting, then, for the 18 shooters who will take the field for a morning of pheasant hunting. The varied terrain of Toohollie will present the huntsmen with rewarding challenges in the form of some 250 released birds. Following the hunt, a delicious down-home barbecue meal will be served, with all the trimmings. Your morning complete, and your stomach replete, you may take home your bounty of birds …including tail feathers for your new hat!!

Post-“Sensations” Cocktails in the Jepson Center for 100

On March 22, the Telfair Academy and the Savannah Music Festival are honored to present Wu Han, Philip Setzer, and David Finckel for a 90-minute performance which will explore two of

Schubert’s masterful pieces, from Opus 99 & 100. Once you have secured your own tickets, please utilize the creativity of Meg McRae to fashion the perfect invitation for your guests—who will join you for an after-party every bit as sensational as the performance which you have

just experienced. All three musicians will also join you, so perhaps the conversation will turn in such a way as to facilitate your understanding of the composer, the music itself, and their perceptions of their roles as interpreters. Contemporary adaptations of classic cocktails and hors

d’oeuvres will mark the contributions of the Telfair’s own Café Zēum and of Savannah Special Events.
