Lori Keith Robinson knows the marshes, rivers, and creeks of the Georgia Low Country as well as any shrimper who navigates them.  Her truck, pulled off next to remote shores and landings, is a familiar sight to other explorers of local waterways. The scenes that emerge from her brushes seem to radiate light and color, combining the beauty of the water and the marsh.

The love of color and form, the affect and effect of environment, and the excitement of communicating experience generate these paintings. The paintings you see are moments of awareness, contemplated and allowed to develop into statements of belief. Each expanse explores the solitary nature of the effort to understand.

The In Plain View series began with a sense of promise and danger. The challenge was to incorporate a sense of the sweeping timelessness of the Low Country salt marsh and its fragility. True beauty is its own drawback. An occasion of artless, open beauty tempts one to experience the moment again. The act of repetition pollutes the experience, as the viewer imposes an expectation and formulation which subvert the initial promise. The original bloom of nature becomes unnatural through our invention.

Daniel Smith is a SCAD graduate who has also studied at the Central Academy of Art and Design in Beijing, China. His work is in collections in Australia, Aruba, Antigua, Canada, China, England, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and throughout the United States, including the permanent collection of the Telfair Museum of Art.

Upon retiring from her nursing career, Diane Fullman Booker discovered a passion for photography and returned to AASU to learn the deeper aspects of image-making.  Dedicated to printing from the negative in a digital world, Booker immersed herself in classical black-and-white and lithographic printing.  Her landscapes are infused with an atmosphere that implies the very temperature of the air. In this piece, lith developer was used in the darkroom to achieve soft, warm tones.

A graduate of Cambridge University, Bill Rousseau began his professional career in the tech field. He began his painting career after retiring from his position as Director of Technology for United Technologies Corporation and moving to Savannah. While pursuing his MFA in painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Rousseau began to paint a series of landscapes using the theme of houses in Savannah.  He quickly discovered that the challenge of representing the curvilinear ironwork and ever-changing light patterns added fuel to his creative fires. The character and strength of the structure is an important theme in his work, as is the depiction of light as it shines through the trees, squares, and other buildings. Rousseau’s paintings stop time at its most beautiful moment.

Originally from New York and Connecticut, Lawrence Levow spent 32 years as a successful industrial designer, creating products, logos, and packaging for clients including General Electric, Revlon, and J.C. In recent years, Levow’s work has been featured in various local galleries and elsewhere across the United States.  The artist masterfully captures the atmosphere and mood of a locale, as demonstrated in this quiet portrayal of an Australian café.

Driven by an interest in dynamic forms shaped by time and the forces of nature, Matt Toole transforms found objects into works of art.  Evidence of tension and strain only serves to enhance their beauty. Toole grew up around the barrier islands and salt marshes of Savannah.  He received a BFA from Georgia Southern University in 1994 and an MFA from Southern Illinois University.  The artist has been involved with the International Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art for the last nine years and is currently a professor of foundation studies and sculpture at the Savannah College of Art and Design.

John Diamond began woodturning in 1993, a few years after he and his wife, Nancy, moved to Hilton Head Island. They previously lived in Australia, Japan, and Latin America for almost 15 years while John was employed with an international management consulting firm. He particularly enjoys working with unusual woods–burls from the Northwest, exotic hardwoods and burls from Latin America, Africa, and Australia, and domestic spalted woods. During the turning process, the artist frequently changes the orientation of a piece to highlight unique features or unusual grain patterns and colors. His work is shown in several galleries and is in many private collections.

They all happily coexist at Pojo Point, the wonderfully eclectic home of Charles Ellis. Ellis has filled his yard and home–the cottage his parents built on the property in 1950–with all manner of art and curiosities. In an atmosphere like this, no ties are allowed!
