ITEM 4 In Plain View Valued at $1,900 Daniel Smith Oil and encaustic on canvas 30 x 30 in., framed Donated by the artist The love of color and form, the affect and effect of environment, and the excitement of communicating experience generate these paintings. The paintings you see are moments of awareness, contemplated and allowed to develop into statements of belief. Each expanse explores the solitary nature of the effort to understand. The In Plain View series began with a sense of promise and danger. The challenge was to incorporate a sense of the sweeping timelessness of the Low Country salt marsh and its fragility. True beauty is its own drawback. An occasion of artless, open beauty tempts one to experience the moment again. The act of repetition pollutes the experience, as the viewer imposes an expectation and formulation which subvert the initial promise. The original bloom of nature becomes unnatural through our invention. Daniel Smith is a SCAD graduate who has also studied at the Central Academy of Art and Design in Beijing, China. His work is in collections in Australia, Aruba, Antigua, Canada, China, England, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and throughout the United States, including the permanent collection of the Telfair Museum of Art. |
