Stranger in Paradise: The Works of Reverend Howard Finster preview and opening
Be the first to see this exhibition featuring 168 works by visionary north Georgia artist Howard Finster. Enjoy Finster-inspired food and live banjo music by Joe Flanders. At 6:30 pm, Tommy Littleton, former Director of Finster’s Paradise Gardens will provide a brief recollection of Howard Finster. Mr. Littleton was a key figure in the process of rescuing Finster’s Summerville, Georgia environment from ruin.

Folk art and rock and roll converge in this rarely-screened classic documentary about Athens, Georgia, in the 1980s. In the film, Howard Finster is shown painting with his fingers and jamming on his banjo with rock musician Dexter Romweber. Though Finster was based in Summerville, Georgia, his work was championed early on by Athens musicians R.E.M. who appear in the film along with legendary artists from the classic city including the B-52s, Pylon, Love Tractor, the Flat Duo Jets and many others.
