Passing Time: The Art of William Christenberry
Telfair’s Jepson Center for the Arts
This exhibition features a selection of past and present works by William Christenberry (b. 1936). Through more than 60 photographs, drawings, paintings, sculptures, and building constructions, the show demonstrates how Christenberry draws on his formal training, family traditions, and a lasting connection with his boyhood home in Alabama to capture the spirit of Southern culture in the landscape and architecture of rural Alabama. Folk art, commercial signs, as well as the design elements of his mother’s quilt work and the craftsmanship father’s woodworking skills, influenced his aesthetic sensibilities and are prominent in many of his works.
Passing Time: The Art of William Christenberry is organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The exhibition’s tour is supported in part by the C.F. Foundation, Atlanta
